When opening the Equipment window, the items on the left side (Hat, Body, Accessory, Effect) have upgrade slots while the items on the right side (Ammo, Grapple, Backpack) do not.

Click to show / hide items Here you can wear a hat that will display on top of your head.
Body slot
Click to show / hide items Here you can wear a robe that will change the look of your character.
Accessory slot
