When opening the Equipment window, the items on the left side (Hat, Body, Accessory, Effect) have upgrade slots while the items on the right side (Ammo, Grapple, Backpack) do not. Items with upgrade slots can be improved by using Upgrade Gems, which have a 100%(Green) / 60%(Blue) / 10%(Red) chance to succeed in upgrading the item with better stats.
