	Acquiring your first essence will register that monster into your Research tab. At a cursory glance, you will be able to see that monster's sprite and your current Research level for them. Upon clicking on the monster's square, another window will appear called "Monster Info" in which you will see their name and how many of them you have killed. There will be a lot of ???s, which will progressively be replaced with information after reaching higher levels of Research.
