Skills are a core part of Soul's Remnant, allowing the player to perform special feats in combat or other environments that both reflect and dictate their attribute distribution and equipment loadout. There's more to personal expression than just equipment, after all.
It's also about how you live and how you fight!
Skill Tables
Below are sortable tables meant to help you compare skills, as well as help you determine what skills you may or may not use while playing.
The Skill Categories table is a good way of determining what skills benefit from what types of Attack Speed. For example, Shield Slam's cooldown is only affected by Melee Attack Speed and Global Attack Speed. You can easily find skill categories while playing Soul's Remnant as well, by going to the Learned Skills tab of your Skills Window [K] and checkmarking the relevant box.
- Grapple may fall into the Life category, but it is very much useful in combat! The Grapple skill can allow you to hang from walls, ceilings, and platforms for approximately 5 seconds before you are detached. While attached you can swing side-to-side, and change your vertical position with the Up and Down keys. From early-game and even into late-game, Grapple can be an invaluable tool in the right hands!

Active Skills

When leveling up, you gain both Stat Points to assign in your Stats window [O] and 1 Skill Point to assign in your Skills Window [K]. You gain 2 Skill points every 4 levels, and 3 Skill points every 12 levels.
This is because in Soul's Remnant, while you can level a Combat Skill up to level 20, the actual level of any Combat Skill you use requires the usage of Skill Points. And the level of your Active Skills have a considerable impactful on damage calculations.
Combat skills can cost anywhere from 1 to 3 skill points to activate at level 1, and from that point on each additional level costs 1 skill point.
You can Activate a skill by opening your Skills Window, and dragging it from the Skill Tree into the "Active Skills" Area to the left!
When you do this with a skill that has a Learned level higher than 1, you will be prompted to choose at what level you want to activate that skill. The prompt will also inform you of the total amount of Skill Points you will need to do so.
If you level an Active Skill while you don't have any more stored Skill Points, then you will receive the following message:
Couldn't auto assign your new [Skill Name] level because there aren't enough skill points.
The skill will still reach a higher Learn Level, but your Active Skill will not.
Combat Skill Leveling
Before talking about anything else, it's important that we make something very clear here about Combat Skills:
1) Skill level is one of the largest ways to increase your DPS, and the higher the level the higher the difference. Try not to leave skills at +100% Skill EXP if you have the resources to level them!
2) Lower level skills will gain less Skill EXP both for itself and for the relevant Passive(s), so even more reason to level your skills!
3) The math works in such a way that all skills do similar amounts of damage when taking cooldown into consideration. Feel free to focus on the skills you like the most!
4) Soul's Remnant has a system in place that makes leveling low level skills easier.
If you have a Combat Skill that is a higher level than the one you are currently gaining Skill EXP for, then the amount of Skill EXP is increased proportionally!
Those are the big things we wanted to make clear.
Also, as hinted above, you can gain Skill EXP even for a skill that is ready to be leveled. It will carry over, and you can see for yourself at anytime how much Skill EXP a skill has by mousing over it in the Skills Window. So yes, you can comfortably gain Skill EXP even after reaching enough to level the skill up. As mentioned above however, skill level is a big factor in how damage is calculated.
And finally, a rare material used to level every combat skill past a certain point are the Dungeon Crystals, which are best obtained through Dungeons. Or the Auction House. Odds are they'll be pretty expensive there though, so don't be shy about trying to use up your Dungeon Passes with a party!
Life Skill Leveling
Skill level is also very important for Life Skills. In order to gather certain materials from the world, you will need to have the related Gathering Skill at a high enough level. And certain crafting recipes will only be unlocked after reaching the required Crafting Skill level as well. Life Skills also have a much higher maximum level than Combat Skills do, capping out at 99!
Luckily, it's a lot more straightforward to level a Life Skill than it is to level a Combat Skills. Life Skills don't have any material requirements to level them! Because of this, Life Skills will typically level up automatically once you get enough Skill EXP for them, making it easy to keep gathering or crafting without having to worry about missing out on any benefits.
So go forth, level your skills, and take anything and everything from every map!
Combat Passives and Perks

When gaining Skill EXP for any Combat Skill, you will also gain Skill EXP for that skill's "Category Passive". Melee. Range. Magic. Faith.
- Certain skills also have a Combat Passives requirement to learning them!
Passives level automatically and require no material components, mainly providing % Damage every 3 levels in what are referred to as "Skill Perks". Each Category Passive goes up to a maximum level of 99, and also have notable breakpoint levels where Skill Perks provide something besides % Damage:
Melee:
Every 4 levels, you gain +3 Max HP.
Range:
Every 5 levels, you gain +1 Crit Rate.
Magic:
Every 3 levels, you gain +1 Max MP.
Every 12 levels, you gain +1 MP Regeneration Per Tick (and +1 Max MP).
Faith:
Every 7 levels, you gain +1 Defense.
Every 20 levels, you gain +1 HP Regeneration Per Tick.
Life Perks
Leveling your life skills is also another way to get stronger and "luckier"!

Herbalism:

Mining:
Every 15 levels, you gain +1 Light Radius.
Fishing:
Every 10 levels, you gain +1 LUK.
Every 30 levels, you gain +1 Speed (And +1 LUK).
Jewelry Crafting:
Every 14 levels, you gain +1% Item Drops.
Weapon Smithing:
Every 15 levels, you gain +1 Damage Balance.
Every 29 levels, you gain +1 Armor Pen.
Armor Crafting:

Cooking:
Every 19 levels, you gain +1 Knockback Resistance.
Artisan Crafting:
Every 8 levels, you gain +1% Echoes Find.
Every 16 levels, you gain +1% Soul Crystal Find (and +1% Echoes Find).
Macros

Soul's Remnant provides a way for players to press one key and use up to three skills at once. This is the Macros system!
You can go into your Skills Window and click the "Macros" button at the bottom left to open up an area that looks like the image to right.
There are 5 Colored Macros Icons available, each of them able to have up to 3 skills assigned to them.
After dragging skills into an empty slot in the Macros Area, you can then drag one of the Colored Macros Icons onto a hotbar.
You can drag skills from your Active Skills Area, from the "Learned Skills" tab, and even the "Life Skills" tab if you really want to!
Using a Colored Macros Icon will use the skills assigned to it from left-to-right, and you can hold down the key to repeatedly use the Macro just as you would any skill.
- Arrow Skills cannot be used in Macros.
